ADJUDICATOR’S COMMENTS

NATIONAL EMBLEM – E E BAGLEY

Excellent introduction, particularly the reduction in volume in bar 3 to make room for the crescendo, although not written. Wonderful wide variety of dynamics – really happened from beginning to end.

(lovely to see French Horn on the outside – helps with balance)

Trio – neat, tidy same length crotchet playing. Lovely fanfare moments from the cornets & trumpets.

Bass drum balance spot on and then real weight at the end. Percussion section excellent throughout, tight & precise without dominating.

BRING HIM HOME – SCHONBERG Arr. ROBINSON Flute Soloist: NERYS BARLOW

Sensitive accompanying from the band, always a challenge with a Flute Solo. Sensitive flute playing with good phrase shapes, intonation not always true with the band but the music still spoke. Shaped ending.

SUNRISE & SAFARI – ADAM GORB

Sunrise

Good atmosphere created from the beginning, maybe a little quiet for technical safety – Horn entry wonderful, great crescendo into 4.

4 Flutes, Clarinets & Oboe marvellous playing captured the essence really well. Tricky rhythmic patterns played well, across each part.

Intonation just slipped occasionally. Really controlled dynamics at 16. Trumpets were the right volume for f which meant 18 means something – this was a glorious moment, which the whole movement built on.

Safari

Half valves – good.

Percussion held this well across the section, nice balance between parts.

Again 7 a proper mf, not too loud.

Good variety of note lengths played across the band, make sure p are comfortable for the technique.

On the clapping, make sure someone continues to lead & just a bit more positive.
